DEA Releases 2019 National Drug Threat Assessment

Law enforcement officer Brian Shanahan spent 20 years of his career with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a supervisory special agent. During his tenure with the DEA, Mr. Shanahan investigated drug trafficking and money laundering groups, which led to the dismantling for more than 30 drug organizations, the arrests of more than 275 individuals, and the seizure of large volumes of illegal drugs. Brian Shanahan has received various commendations and awards in recognition of his service with the DEA.

The DEA recently released the 2019 National Drug Threat Assessment. The report describes the threats posed to Americans by drug abuse and domestic and international drug trafficking.

Each year, the DEA issues the National Drug Threat Assessment to describe the challenges communities face regarding drug trafficking and drug abuse. The report also features statistical data on usage and trafficking trends of prescription drugs, synthetic drugs, and illicit drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin.

According to the report, deaths caused by drug overdoses dropped 4 percent in 2018, while deaths caused by overdoses of controlled prescription opioids dropped 13 percent. The United States continues to tackle the spread of methamphetamine and fentanyl. The DEA and other law enforcement agencies will continue the exercise of diligence in combating drug traffickers.
